Research now shows that Pilates reduces chronic lower back pain
Pilates exercises have been shown to give greater short term improvements in movement & pain than other types of physical activities, according the latest international research.
A recent review of more than 152 studies, found Pilates provided equivalent improvements to other forms of physical exercise.
The review shows that Pilates exercise resulted in significant improvements in pain & functional ability in the short term compared to usual types of care and physical activity in people with chronic lower back pain.
The research suggests that supervised Pilates exercise sessions should be undertaken 2-3 times per week for 3-6 months as well as being supplemented by home exercises to get good results.
Physiotherapists and other health care professionals regularly prescribe Pilates exercise for clients with chronic lower back pain and see significant results. This review supports the role of exercise in recovery from back pain.
