Drawing on earlier Greek philosophy, it set up as its basic concept the idea of the vital force. To the Naturopath, the vital force pervades all of nature, keeping it in order and harmony. In the body showing itself as its self healing power.
Like homeopaths, naturopaths saw the symptoms of disease as the remedial effort of the body to throw off disease. Properly managed, the disease process is also the road to cure. To give the body the best chance for self healing, detoxification diets, fasting, rest, and the other cornerstones are advocated.
Nowadays other systems of medicine are included under the umbrella of Naturopathy due to their central belief in the vital force i.e. Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine including Flower Essences and Nutrition, Iris Analysis. It is nature which heals not medicine. Medicines can assist nature but only if they work with her rules and direction of cure.
